When My Mind Is Clear

Writer: renegades4christrenegades4christ

King David, once a ruddy-faced little boy with giant-sized faith, began his journey as a shepherd tending his father’s flocks in the hills of Bethlehem. This early passion shaped his understanding of leadership and care. He honed his skills while guarding his father’s sheep, and it had given him patience, vigilance, and the sensibility to protect the vulnerable—qualities that would later define his reign as a king.

With disgust at Goliath's arrogance toward God, David declared in 1 Samuel 17:34-36 (NLT), “I have been taking care of my father's sheep and goats," he said. "When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I'll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God!” This was spoken by a boy whose unwavering trust in God gave him the confidence to believe he could face and defeat a giant.

This mindset might have seemed bombastic or naïve to some, but it was actually a mind that was clear, with unwavering faith in God. David’s confidence stemmed from his deep trust in the Lord, as evidenced by his response to King Saul in 1 Samuel 17:37 (NLT): “The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” David’s faith was rooted in his past experiences where he had witnessed God’s deliverance and protection. His assurance was not based on his own strength but on his belief in God's power and faithfulness.

David’s trust is further highlighted in Psalm 23:1-4 (NLT), where he writes, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” This deep-seated faith allowed David to approach the challenge of Goliath with the assurance that God would be with him, guiding and protecting him, just as He had in the past.

The mind is crucial in cultivating a giant-sized faith that can overcome every obstacle and secure the life we were created to live. This kind of faith starts with a mindset rooted in trust and conviction in the goodness and power of God. As Romans 12:2 (NLT) instructs, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” Transforming our thinking in accordance with God’s Word aligns us with mind of Christ and God’s promises. This empowers us to face challenges with unwavering faith.

The wisdom of Proverbs 23:7 (NLT) tells us, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” Our thoughts and beliefs shape our reality. When we fill our minds with God’s truth and promises, we have a clear mind, the kind it talks about in Philippians 4:8 (NLT): “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise,” When this becomes our mindset, we develop a faith that can conquer any giant.

David’s mindset is a powerful example of this principle. Confronting Goliath, David’s confidence was rooted not in his own abilities but in his trust in God. He declared to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45 (NLT), “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” His faith was not just an emotional response but a deeply held belief rooted in his understanding of God’s power and past deliverances. This mindset allowed him to face the giant with confidence, knowing that God was on his side. In the same way, when our minds are aligned with God’s truth and His promises like David’s was, we too can overcome obstacles and fully embrace the life we were created for. ■
