The Privilege of Sonship

John 3:16(NKJV) is a glorious verse in God’s Word, and it is so beloved by many believers because it informs and reminds of God’s unconditional and limitless love for us all. This verse tells us “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Our Master Jesus came to earth on God’s mission, and this mission was to save us and to make us God’s sons and daughters. Our Heavenly Father wanted us to be members of His holy and royal family, and He made this possible through the death and resurrection of our beloved Lord. Because of this, we have special rights and privileges. These are called ‘Sonship’ rights, and because we have them, we can walk in the victory that Jesus Christ won for us every moment of each day!

Those of us that have believed in the resurrection of Christ and made him Lord of our lives are reborn. Jesus Christ told Nicodemus in John 3:5-7(NLT), “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don't be surprised when I say, 'You must be born again.'” The Holy Spirit recreates our human spirit, and 2Corinthians 5:17 tells us that we become new creations in Jesus Christ when this happens. Never before in all of time has there been anyone like us, sons of the Most High.

This was all made possible because of what our Heavenly Father accomplished through His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. Our powerful Redeemer didn’t just risk his life for us, he gave it over completely. He laid down his life willingly so that we could become his brothers and sisters. We have been newly created in Christ, and we have the privilege and ability to have the same character, nature, and power for good that he exercised when he walked upon the earth. We have spiritual life and have become alive to our Heavenly Father in a way that we could never have imagined. 1Corinthians 1:30-31(NLT) says, “30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31 Therefore, as the Scriptures say, "If you want to boast, boast only about the LORD."

Words are inadequate to express our appreciation for the gift of sonship rights that our Heavenly Father has given us, it’s simply too enormous. However, we have a responsibility to respond wholeheartedly to God for this enormous gift. We do this be walking in the liberty and peace Christ has provided and by living according to the example that he left us. Colossians 1:10 affirms that because of what we’ve received, we can always live in such a way that we honor and please the Lord. We can produce the fruit of the Spirit, can continue growing in Christ and in our relationship with God.

Ephesians 1:11(NLT) says, “Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.” Through Christ, we have been delivered out of the hand of the adversary. We are no longer bound to darkness and sin, because God has freed us! Now we are His children of the light! Our Heavenly Father has paid the ransom to redeem us from the enemy with the blood of His precious only begotten Son. So, we can rest fully in the reality that total and complete payment for our sins was made on our behalf. God wanted this for us, and because of His overwhelming act of love through Christ, we have the privilege of growing in a meaningful relationship with Him. We can walk in His love, power, and grace, and have fellowship with our wonderful and loving Heavenly Father every moment of each day.■
