It Comes Back Around

Whether we want to admit it or not, the reality that God created the universe to be governed by His laws is inescapable. God loves peace, and peace is impossible without order. By the same token, order is impossible without laws. God’s laws set His love in motion, but humans didn’t quite grab on to this with both hands. They failed to see that moving to the motion of God’s love has always been His goal for us. We took the law and left out the love, and this got us in a whole bunch of trouble. God didn’t leave us in the dark about His intentions. He wants us to have faith in Him and His love. He wants our love for Him and His for us to flow to others through faith. There’s nothing haphazard about God’s laws. They are perfect in every way, and when we understand and follow them, our lives will be blessed beyond measure. They are not to put us in bondage, but to keep us in our Heavenly Father’s Will and Plan in the most fulfilling and amazing ways.

The sun has never ceased to shine, the earth continues to stay in orbit, and gravity has never betrayed any living person. These all show God’s supreme intelligence and creative power. The continuation of our very existence is due to the reality that He is perfect, and His laws do not fail. Most of us recognize this, but when it comes to truths like the one Jesus Christ expressed in Luke 6:38, we catch a case of amnesia. Jesus said, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” Giving equals receiving. This is law! No way to get around it no matter what we do. There is no flexibility whatsoever in this truth. If we put something out there, it is going to be returned to us. If we put negative stuff out there, negative stuff will come back to bite us, and it will do so more fiercely than our original investment. Same for good stuff. If we give out goodies, goodies will be returned. And our good deeds are rewarded at a level greater than our initial positive investment.

Most of us really like it when the good stuff comes back to us, because good treasures add to the foundation of our lives. But when the opposite is true, and we face a consequence from our wrong choices and decisions, we then look to blame God or others. Most of us won’t bring out that trusty mirror and take a good long look at our thoughts, conversations, attitudes, and behaviors. Instead, we play the blame game, and this is the kind of game where there is never a winner.

Psalm 84:11(NLT) tells us, “For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” Our Heavenly Father is good all the time. He’s not in the business of withholding blessings from us but wants us to live a blessed existence continually. God tells us that He’s our sun and shield. He’s our Protector and Provider, and one of the reasons that He’s given us His Word is so we’ll learn to remain in His care. He tells us in 2Timothy 3:16(NLT), “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” God knows that we’re not perfect, and if we stay in His Word, every day we can learn and grow to be more like Christ. This is His greatest desire for us.

It is very challenging to trust in a person that isn’t consistent in their character and actions. In our everyday lives, we know and come in contact with people like this all the time. They vacillate from cold to hot, and they do not keep their word. They say one thing and do something completely different. God isn’t like this. He is faithful and He doesn’t vacillate. He tells us in Malachi 3:6(NKJV), “For I am the LORD, I do not change.” To honor and respect God’s sovereignty, you and I must know this about Him. His Word is the definitive authority, and there is no need to ever question it. When God says something, it goes. It will turn out exactly as He has spoken. So, when He tells us that when we plant seeds of selfishness, malice, resentment, arrogance and other remnants of darkness, that stuff will harvest in our lives. Galatians 6:7(NKJV) very plainly spells it out, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

God wants us to make choices and decisions in life that are backed by His love. He desires to love others through us. This is one of the reasons He tells us in Galatians 6:9-10(NLT), “9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. 10 Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” Heavenly Father makes it very clear that the choices concerning what we think, do, and say are very consequential. Through our words, thoughts, and actions, we are building our futures. If we are diligent to follow the instructions of His Word and follow the example of Christ, we can build the life we’ve always wanted.

Through His Word, the example of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and through the Holy Spirit, God has given us everything we need to live abundantly. 2Timothy 1:7 tells us that He hasn’t given us a spirit of fear. Fear and all its cousins, like doubt, defeat, and instability, do not come from God. He’s given us a spirit of power, love, and sound mind. He has equipped us to make decisions and choices that please Him and prevent a constant cycle of problems and irritation. We were meant to have joy on every hand, and the greatest thing we can do to achieve a joyous existence, and keep it that way, is to let the joy, love, and peace of Christ be our motivation daily. When we do this, God will cause the goodness of what we’ve planted to come around, and it will bless us in the sweetest ways. ■
